Startups Open Sourced: Stories to inspire and educate

by Jared Tame on April 23, 2011

This book will change the way you think about startups. With over 33 startups interviewed in this book, you’ll find the most honest, candid, and open collection of interviews available on today’s most successful startup founders.

You use many of these applications on a daily basis already, but for the first time you can truly get inside these founders’ heads and understand how they think about the toughest topics startups face: finding cofounders, coming up with ideas, getting product-market fits, staying motivated, raising venture capital, hiring, and more. Don’t reinvent the wheel or learn the hard way–take the advice from these founders who have spent the most time thinking about these difficult problems and how to solve them in the fastest and most efficient ways possible.

People love this book. Here’s what they’re saying.

Andrew Warner

Here are a few quotes from influential people in Silicon Valley who all have strong backgrounds in startups:

“Holy crap. This is great! I’m impressed by how candid these interviews are—the book is true to its title in that it open sources the founders’ personal lives and their startups. If you want to understand how some of today’s most impressive startup founders got to where they are, this book will deliver.” – Andrew Warner, founder of Mixergy.com, has interviewed over 300+ founders.

“Count me as a fan.”Derek Sivers

“This is a good read for entrepreneurial students because it will help them feel more validated. It’s not all glory but is in fact a lot of hard work, loneliness, and rejection. I think this book will end up causing more students to try to become entrepreneurs, which could be a good thing.”Niniane Wang, Cofounder of Sunfire Offices in Mountain View, CTO of Minted.com

“This is one of the richest available collections of authentic, inspiring, and honest stories about how entrepreneurs become entrepreneurs.” - Avichal Garg, Cofounder of Blueprint Labs

OK – i am a little confused here by two things. The first is – you are selling via Lulu only the paper back version, why not an EPUB version for us European readers? Kindle has not really made any inroads in the EU (except UK and Germany) – so we are left a little disadvantaged to getting our hands on your book.

Second is – what is up with amazon! You have advertised here on your site for $9.99 but when I click on the link to amazon, it tells me i have to pay $13.79 for the .mobi version (aka kindle version)… Is there any particular reason for this? This leaves yet another distaste in our mouths of amazons shitty selling tactics which never align with the author or Publisher itself. I really hate to say this – but you have lost quite a few sales on this tact pulled by amazon, as we all refuse to pay over the market value for your book.

We really wanted this book to look at other people’s experience in start-ups. I hope you can look into this a little further and get back to us why this has occurred. You can always ping us via our email or on twitter!

Hi Damian, I was able to purchase the Kindle book (US store) for $9.99, and that’s what Amazon had charged me. Maybe the UK price structure is different? Can you e-mail me so we can work this out?

If someone buys the Lulu version and asks me for any other digital format, I’ll e-mail it to them (my e-mail is at the end of the foreword). If it seems like too many people are asking for it, I’ll start bundling it with the e-book purchase, although so far nobody has asked for the .mobi version when they buy the .pdf. I’m not sure if I will add the e-book version to Lulu.com any time soon–Lulu’s tools are night and day compared to what e-junkie offers; the value that Lulu provides is mostly in their on-demand printing, they don’t handle digital books very well.

Hope this helps. Please get in touch with me, hopefully we can work this out. I think you’re on Twitter, if you need my contact info I can DM it to you.

Hi Jared,

I should have jumped back to here once we sorted this out. Thanks again for the quick response and also providing a solution so fast.

Yeah – I think amazon plays with the prices internationally – which kinda sucks – but I am not going to complain over $2 for such a well thought book.

Thanks again, it really made me a happy customer to have such a quick response. Book is awesome btw – loads of info that we can now use for our own platform.
